Sebastian Bru is a native of Vienna and was born into a family of musicians in 1987. He began learning the cello at the age of 8, taking lessons from his father, from Professors R. Nagy and J. Bayrov at the Konservatorium Wien, and from Professor Podhoransky in Bratislava. He has had masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, David Geringas and Heinrich Schiff.
He was a multiple award winner at “Prima la musica”, an Austrian competition for young musicians, at the Fidelio Competition and at Musica Juventis, and he also received a prize at the Zyklus Internationale.
Bru has performed as a soloist on many occasions, appearing in venues including the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Bösendorfersaal, the Altes Rathaus, the ORF’s Groẞer Sendesaal, Stift Altenburg, Mödling’s Stadttheater and Kitsee Castle. He has also toured extensively, playing in Bulgaria, South America, Asia and many other locations.
As a soloist he has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra in Buenos Aires, the Sofia Philharmonic, the Vienna Kammerorchester, the Spirit of Europe Orchestra, the Vienna Klassiks and with colleagues from the Vienna Philharmonic.
As well as numerous radio broadcasts on Ö1 programmes such as Intrada, which featured his CD of Romantic works, Bru has starred in a number of live broadcasts. These include a show with Rudolf Buchbinder, performances from ORF’s Groẞer Sendesaal and from the EBU Competition, and considerable exposure on Bulgarian television and radio.
Chamber music is another area in which Bru excels. He has performed with colleagues from the Vienna Philharmonic, Rudolf Buchbinder, Ildiko Raimondi, the 6 celloists from the Vienna Philharmonic and many more.
He has also appeared in many orchestras, including the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the UBS-Verbier Festival Orchestra (conducted by James Levine), the RSO Wien, the Wiener Volksoper as well as in the Vienna-Berlin Chamber Orchestra.
From November 2006 until September 2010 Bru was a member of the Wiener Staatsoper-Wiener Philharmoniker.
Since October 2010 he has been a 1st solo cellist for the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
